PARBOLD GIVE BELLE GREEN THE 'BLUES' TO GO TOP!
Parbold stormed back to the top of the table with a strong performance in their 5-0 victory over struggling Belle Green.
In a game with many talking points, The Cherries were unlucky not to have chalked a higher scoreline after hitting the woodwork on four occassions, with Paul Jones, Michael Pearce, Steven Flemming and Lee Commander being the unlucky contingent.
The biggest talking point was a Paul MacKenzie no show once again, with the troubled midfielder rumoured to be house hunting in London so he can live the rock and roll lifestyle he has become accustomed to recently. The George Best wannabe, but with less hair and a fraction of the talent on and off the field, will surely find himself in hot water on his return.
Parbold found themselves in the unfortunate position of having to swap jerseys with divisional rivals Ashton who agreed even though their cup semi final was called off due to the poor weather. The Cherries were now forced to play in blue jerseys, red shorts, red socks. Parbold agreed to go ahead with the game to ensure that Golborne did not have the chance to stretch their lead and deal a psychological blow to the Alder Lane side.
The Cherries were quick off the blocks trying to claw back the 12 goal deficit at the top of the table, thus putting further pressure on a Golborne team that still have to host George Lupton and Co in a couple of weeks time.
Parbold's first goal came was a joy to behold and settled the nerves of the visiting team, and it was Paul Jones who was on the scoresheet for the first time this season, latching onto a good ball from record equalling Jay Heeley, and rifling his strike past the motionless goalkeeper.
Did I say record equalling Jay Heeley? Make that RECORD BREAKING Jay Heeley. He's done it! After a barren spell in front of goal for the past two games, the little man has done it, and his number one fan known as Tizzy's son was not there to share it. Furlong whipped the corner to the near post and Heeley flicked the ball home to set a new goalscoring record.
And he never stopped there. Minutes later, the fans thought they were watching a replay of Heeley's goal as he struck again from a carbon copy move. Furlong whipped the ball to the same place from a corner kick and Heeley was once again on hand to flick the ball home with a deft header. Gary Quinn's record is all but a distant memory in the minds of the supporters now.
The Cherries could have been six up at the break with Paul Jones and Michael Pearce both hitting the woodwork after long range efforts. Jay Heeley could have put the icing on the cake to his display but a wonder stop on the line by the defender when a goal was a certainty put paid to that.
Half Time - Belle Green 0-3 Parbold
The Cherries re-entered the field with a steely determination to score the goals that would make the back end of the season very interesting, but it was becoming more and more difficult on a pitch that was cutting up and waterlogging badly, and against a strong wind.
The woodwork came to Belle Green's rescue again in the second half after Furlong was halted running through and from the resulting free kick saw Flemming's efforts strike the bar again. A cruel blow to the full back who has this season made the right back position his own, leaving Dave Noble to ponder his career.
It lucked as if it wasn't going to be Parbold's day in front of goal any further when Lee Commander lifted a shot over the stranded keeper which again struck the crossbar. But this time Jeff McFarlane was on hand to put the ball where it belonged, right in the onion bag.
It spurred The Cherries on to stick another goal away before the final whistle blew and it was obviously getting on the players minds when Michael Pearce opted to take a strike when there were options around him. Furlong was disgusted and let Pearce know, to which Pearce took offence to. It was a minor spat that was soon forgotten with Furlong and Pearce making their peace soon after.
And it was Pearce who wrapped up the goalscoring after some excellent work from Ian MacKenzie who skipped past two challenges before slipping a delicious pass through to Jeff McFarlane who drilled the ball across the face of goal leaving Albert with the easiest of finishes to compound Belle Green's misery.
Golborne's 3-1 slip up this afternoon has put Parbold 3 points clear at the top of the table and reduced the goal difference to 5 goals in Golborne's favour. The bookies odds are now slightly favouring the Alder Lane side who are bang in form after setting a league record of 5 months unbeaten and ten clean sheets. Can this be a season of history in the making? Only time will tell.
